May 25, 2013… We started a journey, not having any idea what was in store for us…
We stood in the yard of the first house on a list of many to see that day, and prayed with Dan (our realtor) as we embarked on the adventure of looking for a home to purchase. My prayer in the days just prior had been this: if there was a house the Lord had for us, that we would all feel like it was home when we walked in. I was hesitant at the whole prospect of moving again for oh, so many reasons – but the Lord had answered prayers up to this point, leading us to this moment in time.
We looked in Bloomington, Burnsville, Savage and Shakopee that day… and when we walked through the home at 13324 Lynn Ave in Savage – it happened! We all fell in love with the house, the layout, the location, the possibilities… and by the end of the afternoon, plans were in place to put in an offer on the house. Just a few hours later however, we learned that another offer was already pending. We looked a few more times, but nothing stood out and there wasn’t ever another house that brought the answer to my prayer of it feeling like home to all of us.
Then, two weeks later, I saw it – back on the market, listed as available… just as we had come to the place of deciding to stay put in our Eden Prairie rental home. My email and call to Dan of “Really? Is it true?” began what turned out to be a long and drawn out process with obstacles big and small. Each bend in the road gave us the opportunity to again lay it all at the foot of the cross, asking the Lord to work on our behalf if this was indeed the home HE had for us – and also asking that if this wasn’t His plan, that the process be stopped. We had ample opportunities to take steps (leaps!) of faith, trusting Him for the next step in what felt, many times, like the great unknown!
On September 24, 2013 (just one day shy of 4 months from the first time we saw the house) – we closed on the property that we now call home! It has been good for me to reflect , to look back in my journal, and to remember all that the Lord did to bring us here.Psalm 105:1-5 Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name, make known among the nations what he has done. Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts. Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. Look to the Lord and his strength; see his face always. Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced.
It’s been good to remember because there have been moments when I allowed fear to take first place – and I wondered if we had done the right thing – actually voiced out loud the question, “Did we make a mistake buying this house?” Moments like a water heater needing to be replaced, a furnace needing repairs, or finding yet another water pipe that was dripping. Moments like utility bills being far more than expected, winter driving to & from school, or getting the news that Andy’s current teaching position is being eliminated. Oh, how Satan loves to take our eyes off the One who is in control.
Which is why I love Psalm 105:1-5 and read it often because I need reminding to look back and remember. And always, the conclusion is the same… God is good – so very good, all the time. He has done “wonderful acts” – and while much is physical and measurable – so many of those “wonders he has done, his miracles” are in the growth of character in each of us through this past year. He moved mightily to bring us to this home, to this neighborhood while he stretched our faith. We asked for a home in which we could serve Him well and serve others for His glory. We have had the joy of hosting various events and groups of people and we are looking forward to celebrating Sam’s high school graduation in just two weeks. Truly, we have enjoyed these 8 months of living here as our family of five, already storing up so many treasured memories.
